Steve Albini was a legendry figure for many in disparate sectors of the underground in the 80s and 90s, but for those of us in the Midwest, he was mythical, yet tangible. His words where both gospel and hymn, we quoted his ethics and views on the music industry. The coasts had their d.i,y. gold standards… Fugazi would do $5 shows and …. Not do drugs…
Albini would do broke ass bands albums for $50, and he would fuck your girlfriend. Perhaps twice even. Our congregation also came together as choir, and sung the words of his band Big Black, and it cemented bonds, at post show parties, til crashing on dirty floors, on ill conceived tours.
His skill as a producer, gained him the attention of the artists from the labels he rejected, seeking his
knowledge or looking to glob onto his credibility. He fucked their girlfriends and sang songs about their bassists’ panties, and after years of having people scream, “Get a fucking drummer” he did.
But my kind, we were still singing those Big Black songs, perhaps few as often as the opening track from his first ep. I would like to think he would give his blessing, but he is in a better place now…
Chicago…well shit, I did this in Arkansas…everybody is in a better place than me. God damnit!. I was about to say this song was recorded for all my old 90s bros, but that’s bullshit. Arkansas has made me insane, blood thirsty… I want to sing about killing, and destroy things, if there is perhaps…a flammable liquid of some kind in the vicinity?
I’m a Steel Worker, and I kill what I eat.
