Opera Street at Wan Cheng Men

Near Wan Cheng Gate on the south side of Xian's ancient city walls (the oldest functional city walls in the world) is a strip of second floor venues who 7 nights a week, you can hear the clamor pouring from their windows at street level, but most tend to pass by without stopping to investigate. It is a bizarre atmosphere, often just a table of people gathering and the performances tend to be rapid fire, with quickly rotating cast of vocalists backed by a set group of musicians. One advantage, these venues tend to have quality sound systems and microphones on the instruments. Always venturing in alone, and with no explanation ever offered to me, I find the atmosphere quite confounding. There is usually a very well dressed central figure in what ever group assembled constantly handing out tips of 100 rmb notes to the performers. An undeniable vibe of potential prostitution exists, though I haven't seen any evidence to support this, nor do the performers seems to inspire any lustful deviant urges.
